ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- A new attitude and heading reference system for aircraft from Northrop Grumman's German subsidiary has been ordered by Airbus Helicopters.

The LCR-350 system by Northrop Grumman LITEF, for use in military and civilian rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, provides flight control data on heading and attitude.

Northrop Grumman said production of the LCR-350 units for Airbus Helicopters will begin in 2016 following their certification for use on a number of specific Airbus Helicopter types.

The system features a high-performance, micro-electro-mechanical system inertial measurement unit. It also allows directional gyro mode operation, which minimizes magnetic compass errors.

"Our new LCR-350 is a cost-effective solution designed to perform even in the most demanding environmental conditions that are typical for helicopters," said Eckehardt Keip, managing director, Northrop Grumman LITEF.

Details on the number of units to be produced and the value of the contract with Airbus Helicopters were not provided.
