PARIS, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- The military forces of Qatar are receiving a satellite communications system and network operations center from Thales.

The monetary value of the award and the performance timeline for the work were not disclosed but Thales said its communications system would be supplied on a turnkey basis.

"Satellite communication systems are an important component of a military force's voice and data communications capability in the theater of operations," Thales said. "The military satcom network complements existing military radio communications systems.

"Thales will supply the systems needed to transmit and receive communications via satellite, and to process data on the ground."

Thales said the ground-segment system to be supplied to Qatar's ground and naval forces are built around the company's System 21 technology for high-data-rate transmissions, a proven system selected by several NATO countries. It will be interoperable with the other communications systems in service within the Qatar armed forces, including combat radios and fixed networks.
