LONDON, June 23 (UPI) -- Type 45 destroyers of Britain's Royal Navy are to receive support, maintenance and upgrade services from BAE Systems beginning next month.

The two-year contract was issued by the Ministry of Defense and carries a value of about $119 million.

Work under the contract will be performed at the Portsmouth Naval Base, home of the RN's Type 45 destroyers, and on all their operations in home waters and abroad, the company said.

"We are proud to continue our support to the Royal Navy fleet," said John Hudson, managing director, Maritime, at BAE Systems. "Our objective is to ensure the ships are ready and available to be deployed and to continue that support while they are on operations around the world.

"This contract is an excellent example of industry and government working collaboratively to achieve efficiency and effectiveness."

The Darling-class Type 45 guided missile destroyer, built by BAE Systems, is 500 feet in length and has a speed of more than 30 knots. The Royal Navy has six such vessels.

The ships' servicing and support is managed by a team comprised of the Royal Navy, Ministry of Defense and industry.
