Cubic to support simulator systems at British military training ranges

Weapons effects simulators at British military training ranges are to receive repair and other support from Cubic Defense Systems, which originally designed and installed them.

SAN DIEGO, April 30 (UPI) -- Area Weapons Effects Simulator systems at British military training areas are to be repaired and supported by Cubic Defense Systems.

The systems are located at the Salisbury Plain Training Area in Britain and the British Army Training Unit Suffield in Alberta, Canada.

The contract to Cubic Defense is for three years and is worth $35 million.

“AWES and its integrated Tactical Engagement Simulation system simulates large-scale force-on-force combat exercises, including the effects of direct fire, artillery, mortar fire, mines and air-delivered munitions as well as nuclear, biological and chemical weapons,” Cubic said in announcing the award.

The actions and locations of individual soldiers and vehicles are also monitored and tracked by AWES through the use of GPS technology. The "hits," "kills" and "misses" of small-arms fire are recorded with Cubic's Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement system.

The AWES system was developed and installed in 2002 at the installations under a 1998 contract.

Additional contract details were not disclosed.
