HERNDON, Va., April 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. Coast Guard’s fleet of HC-144A Ocean Sentry maritime patrol aircraft has a new addition.

Airbus Defense and Space Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of Europe’s Airbus Group, said this week it has delivered a 17th aircraft to the Coast Guard, with another due before the end of the year.

The HC-144A is based on the Airbus CN-235 medium-range tactical airlifter. It has a maximum speed of 272 miles per hour and a range of 1,801 miles. The aircraft has been operated by the Coast Guard since 2008, the company said.

“Airbus Defense and Space is committed to supporting the U.S. Coast Guard’s HC-144A fleet,” the company said. “Over time, the aircraft has proven to be a cost-effective and operationally indispensable maritime patrol asset.

“The Coast Guard competitively selected and is buying the HC-144A because it has proven to perform the broad range of demanding maritime patrol missions effectively and efficiently, including search and rescue, homeland security and disaster response.”

The Coast Guard operates the aircraft from air stations in Massachusetts, Alabama and Florida. They will also operate from Texas later this year.
