Thales ATM delivering instrument landing systems to FAA

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., March 18 (UPI) -- Five instrument landing systems are being supplied to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration for the U.S. National Airspace System by Thales ATM U.S.

The systems from the U.S. subsidiary of Thales of France are the ILS 420, and are the first procurement under a five-year contract.

"As the FAA transitions to NextGen, Thales will continue to help support and modernize the FAA's inventory of navigational aids," said Tony Lo Brutto, vice president of Thales ATM U.S.

The ILS 420 provides precise vertical and horizontal navigation guidance to pilots for safe approach and landing, the company said. It exceeds FAA and International Civil Aviation Organization requirements for Category III operations.

The system also requires less maintenance activity than similar technologies on the market.

Thales said more than 1,200 Thales MK20A ILS and older generation systems are currently being used in the United States. It did not, however, provide information on how many ILS 420s will be supplied to the FAA over the next five years.
