Lockheed Martin to extend FAA project support

ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 29 (UPI) -- A $440 million contract extension has been given to U.S. aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin to keep working on the Federal Aviation Administration's National Airspace System.

Lockheed has been conducting foundational work on the system the past four years under an integration support contract and will now continue to do so through October 2017.

Under the contract, Boeing provides the FAA with services and integration planning for equipment and infrastructure improvements. The company provides access to experts and technical, engineering and information technology capabilities when the FAA needs to implement or integrate equipment, components or related capital projects to modernize the systems governing the country's air space.

"Lockheed Martin's ... team continues to meet demanding requirements, supporting the FAA's mission of operating the world's safest airspace system," said Preston Hertzler of the FAA. "We look forward to continued success with their team."

Lockheed says it has been providing integration and implementation services across a broad range of areas, including information technology; engineering; energy, environmental occupational safety and health; spectrum analysis; and training and flight procedures support.
