Canada orders more X-ray scanners

EDGEWOOD, Md., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Additional mobile X-ray cargo screening systems are being supplied to Canada by Smiths Detection under a follow-on order.

Smiths Detection said the order from the Canada Border Services Agency is worth more than $8 million and the screening systems will be installed this year at border-crossing sites.

The system being supplied is the HCVM Z60 NA, a high-energy scanner used to inspect trucks, other vehicles and containers for weapons, explosives and narcotics. The system can scan through 12 inches of steel and gives its operators high-resolution images of container contents.

Each scanner can inspect as many as 25 trucks per hour.

"Smiths Detection's HCVM series meets the growing demand for fast and dependable cargo screening to enhance security while supporting the free flow of trade," said Lance Roncalli, Smiths Detection's vice president of sales, Americas. "The technology is also backed by our globally recognized commitment to training and service which offers an exceptional overall value for customers like the CBSA."
