YUMA, Ariz., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Raytheon's 155mm precision-guided Excalibur projectile has successfully demonstrated its compatibility with Germany's PzH2000 self-propelled howitzer.
During live-fire compatibility testing by Raytheon at the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, 10 Excalibur projectiles were fired from a Panzerhaubitze 2000 and struck targets within an average of less than three feet of the aim point from a distance of about 30 miles, Raytheon said.
"These trials clearly demonstrate Excalibur's ability to provide true precision to the PzH2000, giving warfighters in multiple nations a superior advantage on the battlefield," said Michelle Lohmeier, vice president of Raytheon Missile Systems' Land Warfare Systems product line. "The PzH2000 is one of many highly capable cannon artillery systems currently deployed, and now we've proven that it can fire the only mature, true precision solution available today."
The Panzerhaubitze 2000 was developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall for the German Army.
Excalibur, developed under a cooperative agreement between Raytheon and BAE Systems Bofors AB, features a GPS guidance system. Raytheon said it has been successfully demonstrated on Swedish and U.S. Howitzers.
