Electric Boat gets Navy contract modifications

GROTON, Conn., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Two U.S. Navy contract modifications worth a combined total of $16.8 million have been given to General Dynamics Electric Boat for submarine maintenance work.

The maintenance will be performed on nuclear and non-nuclear submarines home-ported at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Conn.

Electric Boat said under the first contract, valued at $8.8 million, it will continue to operate the Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department at the submarine base, providing project management, planning, training and nuclear services to support maintenance, modernization and repairs.

A core group of about 25 Electric Boat employees are assigned to the facility but can be augmented by 100 others for short periods.

The original contract awarded in April has a potential value of $164 million over five years, the company said.

Under the second contract, Electric Boat will continue operating the New England Maintenance Manpower Initiative at the submarine base and will provide overhaul, repair and modernization services in support of nuclear submarines.

Floating dry-docks, support and service craft and other platforms and equipment will also be supplied by the company.

Additional details of the modifications were not disclosed.
