WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- David's Sling, a new Israeli-American missile defense system, has successfully detected, tracked and destroyed its target during testing in southern Israel.
The intercept test – the second for the system – was conducted Wednesday by the Israel Missile Defense Organization and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.
"The successful test is a major milestone in the development of the David's Sling Weapon System and provides confidence in future Israeli capabilities to defeat the developing ballistic missile threat," the U.S. Department of Defense said in a news release.
The David's Sling system is being developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems of Israel and Raytheon of the United States. It uses a two-stage missile interceptor called the Stunner for destroying long-range rockets and cruise missile fired from a distance of 24 miles to 186 miles.
In the intercept test a target missile was tracked by the system's multi-mission radar. The radar then transferred flight information to the battle management control system and the Stunner was launched, the Department of Defense said.
