NATIONAL HARBOR, Md., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Rolls-Royce's enhancement of the T56 engine used on C-130H aircraft has received a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration type certificate, the company said.

The new type certificate for the engine confirms that the company's T56 enhancement program has met or exceeded all FAA requirements for the L-100/382, which is the commercial variant of the C-130 military transport.

Rolls-Royce said it also has completed all requirements to achieve U.S. Air Force engine qualification and formal approval is expected this year.

"The C-130 engine enhancement program continues to demonstrate success, staying on track to save the U.S. Air Force billions of dollars and extend the life of this key transport fleet," said Tom Hartmann, Rolls-Royce senior vice president. "The new FAA type certificate confirms the engine enhancement program is ready to enter service, and we look forward to receiving U.S. Air Force qualification soon."

The T56 enhancement program improves fuel efficiency by nearly 10 percent and lowers turbine temperatures. The enhancement can be installed as part of a conventional engine overhaul, and no aircraft or engine control system modifications are needed.
