General Dynamics upgrading mission computers

FAIRFAX, Va., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Mission system computers on U.S. Navy AV-8B Harrier II jets are set for upgrade by General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems.

The upgrade involves the company configuring the mission system computers with a second, third-generation open systems processor. This configuration will include FACE software upgrades to host required navigation performance and area navigation applications which are being integrated by the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Directorate.

FACE is a technical standard that strengthens the ability to address software obsolescence. It enhances software portability and interoperability across the various Department of Defense airborne platforms and reduces life cycle costs and facilitates the adoption of new technologies through open architecture.

"With sustainability and flexibility in mind, our open architecture design provides the Navy with a computing foundation that enables the quick, low-cost integration of emerging technologies and applications," said Mike Tweed-Kent, vice president and general manager of General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems Mission Integration Systems division.

The contract is for 18 months and is worth $6.1 million.
