Florida orders gas, chemical vapor detectors

EDGEWOOD, Md., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- The State of Florida has ordered portable gas and vapor chemical identifiers from Smiths Detection to strengthen first-responder hazmat capabilities.

Smiths Detection said the state ordered 15 of its GasID units, to be distributed to county and city hazmat teams across Florida, where more than a dozen of the units are already in use.

"First responders choose GasID because it rapidly provides critical information about threats, strengthening their ability to make informed decisions on how to best protect themselves and any community at risk," said Lance Roncalli, Smiths Detection's managing director and vice president of Sales, Americas. "The technology, backed by Smiths Detection's globally recognized commitment to training and service, provides an excellent overall value for our customers."

"The inclusion of this technology in our equipment cache will greatly enhance each team's ability to detect and identify unknown gases and vapors," said Randolph K. Jordan, assistant chief of the City of Fort Myers Fire Department. "With this purchase we have added to the capabilities necessary to protect our state and help ensure a safe environment for our citizens and visitors."

The value of the order and a delivery schedule were not disclosed.
