Army taps General Dynamics for Hydra-70 Rockets

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has given General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products a $67.5 million contract for Hydra-70 air-to-ground rockets.

The contract, from the Army Contracting Command in Redstone Arsenal, Ala., is a modification of an earlier award and brings the cumulative value of the company's Hydra work to more than $1 billion the company said.

"General Dynamics has been the system integrator for the production of Hydra rockets since 1996," said Steve Elgin, vice president and general manager of armament systems. "As a low-risk, high-quality supplier, we work closely with the Army to deliver a weapon that is affordable and reliable in action."

The Hydra rocket can use used from most helicopters and some fixed-wing aircraft. In addition to U.S. aircraft, it is used by combat aircraft of nearly a dozen allied nations.

General Dynamics said the rockets will be produced by its facilities in Arkansas and Ohio and will be completed by the end of 2015.
