July 23, 2013 at 2:48 PM

LINKOPING, Sweden, July 23 (UPI) -- Saab of Sweden reports an unidentified country has contracted it to deploy its Skeldar helicopter drone for maritime use.

The Skeldar UAS is an unmanned vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for surveillance, intelligence, electronic warfare and light cargo missions. It has a speed of about 93 miles per hour and an endurance time of 5 hours.

Saab said the aircraft will be deployed for the customer before the end of this year.

"Skeldar UAS is an excellent choice for maritime operations thanks to its high flight performance, heavy fuel engine and easy-to-maintenance design," said Lennart Sindahl, head of Saab's Aeronautics business unit. "We continuously improve the system with the integration of new sensors and different payload according to customer needs."

Details on the value of the contract and its length were not disclosed.

"The industry's nature is such that depending on circumstances concerning the product and customer, information regarding the customer, will not be announced," Saab said.
