WASHINGTON, July 22 (UPI) -- South Korea is trying to line up a U.S. foreign military sales deal for AIM-120C-7 advanced medium-range, air-to-air missiles.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, in its required notification to Congress, said associated equipment would be included in the deal, which carries an estimated value of $452 million.

The proposed sale will provide the Republic of Korea with a contingency stock of AMRAAM AIM-120C-7 missiles to be used on its KF-16 and F-15K aircraft.

"The proposed sale will provide the ROK with a credible defense capability to deter aggression in the region and ensure interoperability with U.S. forces," the agency said. "Additionally, operational control [OPCON] will transfer from U.S. Forces Korea/Combined Forces Command [USFK/CFC] to the ROK's Korea Command in 2015.

"This acquisition will enhance the capabilities needed to support the OPCON transfer."

South Korea wants a total of 270 AMRAAM missiles. Also to be provided would be containers, missile support and test equipment, provisioning, spare and repair parts, support equipment, personnel training and training equipment, publications and technical documentation.

Raytheon Missile Systems Co. would be the principle contractor.
