Guided projectile tested

ARLINGTON, Va., June 27 (UPI) -- The Multiservice Standard Guided Projectile developed by BAE Systems has successfully completed a guided flight test, BAE Systems announced.

The projectile was fired from a 5-inch 62-caliber Mk 45 Mod 4 Naval Gun System at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

"Currently the U.S. and its allies are using significantly more expensive solutions to address fire support and tactical targets," said Chris Hughes, vice president and general manager of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems. "The [MS-SGP] projectile can provide the U.S. forces with an affordable, long-range, and precision gun-launched projectile to greatly expand our fire support capability."

The guided flight test was the culmination of more than 110 MS-SGP sub-system tests and demonstrated the projectiles capability up to a range of as much as 23.6 miles

The projectile, however, has a maximum range of nearly 60 miles with an accuracy of about 16 feet.

BAE Systems said the projectile will be test fired this summer from a M777 towed howitzer.

Additional details of the project and earlier sub-system testing were not disclosed.
