SPARKS, Nev., June 25 (UPI) -- A prototype radar sensor used on an unmanned aerial vehicle has been successfully demonstrated for the second time for the U.S. Air Force.
Sierra Nevada Corp. said its Airborne Sense and Avoid sensor repeatedly detected and tracked airborne intruders, resulting in more than 60 seconds of avoidance time, which exceeded requirements of the Air Force Research Lab's Multi Sensor Detect Sense and Avoid program's requirements.
"Our sense and avoid sensor incorporates SNC's unique Electronically Reconfigurable Array," said Greg Cox, corporate vice president of SNC's Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management Business Area. "The entire sensor has been designed and developed as an ABSAA building block that is easily scalable to serve as the solution to multiple UAV CONOPS and installation challenges."
Neither the Sierra Nevada Corp. nor the Air Force provided additional details of the system or the demonstration.
"A key program objective is to advance the technology at lower cost relative to current electronically steered antennas," said John Koger, MSDSA program manager for the Air Force Research Lab in Ohio.
