DUSSELDORF, Germany, June 20 (UPI) -- Germany's Rheinmetall AG reports receipt of a $635 million order to supply weapons systems and sub-systems for Leopard 2 tanks and artillery.

The order from an unidentified Arab customer includes 120mm L55-type tank guns for more than 60 Leopard 2A7 main battle tanks, as well as fire control electronics and electro-optical sensors for the tank's medium-caliber weapons station. It will also produce the chassis and L52 main armament for more than 20 PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers.

The order also includes 120mm ammunition for the Leopard and 155mm ammunition for the PzH 2000 in multiple variants, and MTLS modular propelling charges for the artillery system.

Rheinmetall said spare parts, special tools, training and documentation services will also be provided.

Deliveries will begin in 2015 and continue for three years, the company said.

The L55 is a smooth bore howitzer first produced and fielded in 1979 in response to armor developments by the Soviet Union. The L52 is a 155mm weapon.
