LONDON, June 19 (UPI) -- French missile maker MBDA's U.K. unit is leading a British government research and development project to support innovation in aerospace technology.

The geometry handling and integration project has $7.8 million in funding from the government's Technology Strategy Board and industry.

The project brings together British organizations to develop improved modeling techniques to address the challenges faced when modeling airframe geometry and airflow in support of airframe design.

MBDA's team on the project includes Airbus Operations, Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, Transcendata, Altran UK Ltd., ARA and Cambridge Flow Solutions, among others.

"For MBDA, improving high-fidelity aerodynamic modeling techniques for complex airframes is essential for our future missile designs," said Steve Wadey, MBDA's executive group director. "Through partnering with the wider aerodynamics community and working with such a range of technical experts in industry and academia, we are able to collectively develop and share techniques that will benefit the wider competitiveness of the U.K. aerospace industry."
