Typhoons to carry MBDA's Meteor missiles

PARIS, June 18 (UPI) -- MBDA's Meteor air-to-air missile is to be integrated onto Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, complementing missile systems already used by the aircraft.

Integration comes with the signing at the Paris Air Show on Tuesday of an agreement by Eurofighter and NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency, which was witnessed by defense officials of Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain. The three countries all operate the aircraft, built by a consortium comprised of BAE System, EADS and Alenia Aeromacchi.

"This is a further exciting step in the planned upgrade program for this impressive aircraft," said Philip Dunne, Britain's minister for defense equipment, support and technology. "The entire program is a powerful example of European government and industry collaboration in both missile technology and combat air weapon system development.

"Meteor will provide the RAF with a world-leading air-to-air weapons capability and improve prospects for export of the Meteor missile and the Typhoon weapon system."
