Saab contributes to air safety near Seoul skyscraper

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., June 10 (UPI) -- South Korean air force traffic controllers now have an extra level of surveillance of aircraft flying near a Seoul skyscraper going up near an air base.

The enhanced awareness up to about 17 miles from the super-tall Lotte World Tower is being provided by Saab Sensis' Wide Area Multilateration, which features operation deployment of conflict detection and alerting capabilities through the use of non-rotating sensors to triangulate aircraft location based on transponder signals.

The system uses Saab Sensis-developed conflict detection and alerting algorithms to provide air traffic controllers with advanced warning of aircraft operating too close to the tower.

"Saab Sensis was able to design, deploy and commission the entire WAM system within a year of the contract being signed," said D.H. Na, an adviser with the System Integration Division of the developer, Lotte Co. Ltd. "In addition, ROKAF controllers, Lotte staff and Hanshin Electronics Co. Ltd. received training on the system from Saab Sensis to ensure safe operation of flights in this unique environment."

Lotte World Tower will have 123 floors when finished in 2015, rising more than 1,800 feet.

SAAB Sensis has its headquarters in the United States.
