ROANOKE, Va., May 21 (UPI) -- ITT Exelis has received a $48 million follow-on order from the U.S. Army for enhanced night vision goggles.

The order, which is expected to be completed next year, comes under an option to an earlier contract and is the second option exercised for the company's Spiral Enhanced Night Vision Goggle, designated AN/PSQ-20A.

The first option was exercised last year.

"This award confirms our leadership position in the field of night vision technology," said Nick Bobay, president of Exelis Night Vision & Tactical Communications Systems. "We understand the importance of the enhanced night vision program, and we are committed to delivering state-of-the-art technology to the U.S. Army so soldiers can achieve mission success in any environment."

The SENVG features sensor-fused night vision technology that combines infrared imagery and image intensification. It is designed to accommodate future enhancements.

Details on the number of units to be produced were not disclosed.
