FALLS CHURCH, Va., May 20 (UPI) -- The University of Southern California has joined Northrop Grumman's Cybersecurity Research Consortium to combat cyberthreats to the United States.
The consortium was founded in 2009. Other members are Carnegie Mellon University, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Purdue University.
"In today's cyber environment, one of the biggest challenges our customers face is sifting through the enormous amounts of data flowing over their network, understanding its relevance and trustworthiness, and determining how it will affect their mission," said Mike Papay, vice president and chief information security officer, Northrop Grumman.
"When paired with Northrop Grumman's deep domain knowledge and understanding of the global threat, USC's long-term research in big data and analytics will help this industry/academic partnership transition inventive solutions to meet critical customer needs."
As part of the consortium, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering will research issues related to security and trust in big data storage and processing, especially when managed by highly distributed systems. It's Information Sciences Institute, a world leader in the research and development of advanced information processing and computer and communications technology, will be part of the effort.
"Our team has in-depth knowledge of not only the scientific foundations of truly trustworthy high-assurance platforms, but also vast experience with practical deployment of focused government environments," said Roger Schell, senior computer scientist, USC ISI. "We will expand and enhance these prior results into much broader and more important areas, such as securing big data for disparate domains in the cloud."
