ROME, May 3 (UPI) -- The Italian army has received its first NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopter variant from AgustaWestland.

The variant offers flexibility for performing additional roles, such as internal/external load transport, heliborne operations, special operations, search and rescue, casualty evacuation and training.

It can carry as many as 20 soldiers and more than 5,500 pounds of cargo.

Features include a dual bus core avionic system, full glass cockpit with multifunction displays and fly-by-wire controls with a four-axis automatic flight control system.

Weaponry includes as many as two M134D mini-guns.

"This delivery brings to 21 the number of NH90 TTHs delivered to the Italian army from an order for 60," AgustaWestland said, "... and marks another major milestone for the Italian army NH90 program."

As part of the package for the Italian army, the company is also supplying logistics support.

In addition to the 60 helicopters ordered by the Italian army, AgustaWestland is supplying 56 of the aircraft to the Italian navy.

AgustaWestland, together with Fokker Aerostructures and Eurocopter, own NHIndustries, which produces the aircraft
