FAIRFAX, Va., April 25 (UPI) -- A symposium on countering nuclear and radiological threats to the United States is being held at a university in northern Virginia next month.
VIP GlobalNet LLC, which is sponsoring the event, said the symposium is organized "to facilitate a solutions-based discussion regarding nuclear and radiological threats relating to national security, homeland security, and defense."
Government and industry experts will highlight the challenges and showcase detection technologies.
Among the topics to be discussed are technologies to prevent nuclear and radiological terrorism; illicit trafficking of nuclear and radiological materials; interdiction and the proliferation security; man-portable detectors and identifiers; and passive standoff gamma and neutron detection.
Subject matter experts participating include: Maj. Matt Kershner of the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency; Chul Gwon of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory; and Lt. Col. Chris Lehner of U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Administration.
Also participating are experts from schools such as Purdue University, Kansas State University, Texas Tech University and companies such as Alion Science and Technology.
The symposium set for May 15-16 at George Mason University.
