LONDON, April 19 (UPI) -- A next-generation, British-made unmanned ground vehicle for handling hazardous threats has been launched on the international market by Northrop Grumman.

The modular designed system is called Cutlass, which carries a full range of tool, sensors and payloads for explosive ordnance disposal and other tasks.

"Our Cutlass vehicle is setting new standards in the UGV market and significantly enhancing the ability of users to handle hazardous threats safely," said Greg Roberts, managing director, defense and security, Northrop Grumman Information Systems Europe. "It is more dexterous, cost-effective and, as a package, four times faster than any other UGV.

"The vehicle is already in service across the U.K. and has proven itself to be robust and capable in the most demanding environments. We look forward to exploiting the potential opportunities for exporting this capability into international markets."

Cutlass, a six-wheeled vehicle, features a manipulator arm with a three-finger gripper and a specialized sensing system providing a high level of control and dexterity to minimize damage to property and preserve forensic evidence.

The vehicle has a top speed of 7.5 miles per hour but can also "creep" for delicate operations.

Northrop said the system will be demonstrated next week at the Counter Terror Expo in London.
