BALTIMORE, April 16 (UPI) -- Northrop Grumman says its Big SAR mapping system for new F-16 radars delivers the sharpest images available for situational awareness and targeting.
Big Synthetic Aperture Radar is part of the company's Scalable Agile Beam Radar, a multi-function active electronically scanned array radar specifically designed for F-16 retrofit.
"SABR's Big SAR is high-definition radar imagery that covers a large area on the ground in a single image," said Joseph Ensor, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman's Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Targeting Systems Division. "This advance will give F-16 pilots the largest maps with the most detail that they have ever seen in the cockpit.
"Combined with SABR's automatic target cueing capability, the F-16 will have targeting capabilities unmatched by any other fourth-generation fighter."
Northrop Grumman said SABR provides longer detection and longer tracking ranges and high-resolution SAR maps for precision targeting in all environments. Additional details on SABR's Big SAR component, however, weren't disclosed.
