LINKOPING, Sweden, April 15 (UPI) -- Brazilian electronics firm AEL Sistemas S.A. will produce avionics for Saab of Sweden's Gripen NG fighter if it is chosen for Brazil's FX-2 program.
The avionics package would include displays, processors, computers, software, integration services and logistics support.
"The selection of AEL for the delivery of the avionics packages for Gripen NG shows Saab's commitment to Brazilian defense policy," said Eddy de la Motte, head of Gripen Export. "Saab has offered extensive cooperation with Brazilian industry, generating work openings, technology transfers and an opportunity to join in on a joint development program ... within the defense industry as well as a number of other businesses packages."
In 2009 the companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding to identify potential areas of cooperation under the Brazilian FX-2 program, which is to provide the Brazilian air force with a next-generation fighter aircraft.
Boeing of the United States is also bidding on the contract for fighters.
"Our cooperation in the Gripen NG will support Brazil in shifting its defense technology capability from dependent to independent," said says Shlomo Erez, director general of AEL Sistemas. "By taking part in the development process of Gripen NG, AEL Sistemas S.A. will be able to introduce its latest displays, computer and software technologies into a next generation fighter. It will further enhance the successful contribution of AEL Sistemas for the Brazilian military forces."
AEL Sistemas is a subsidiary of Israel's Elbit Systems Ltd.
