BAE Systems rocket on target

NASHUA, N.H., April 10 (UPI) -- BAE Systems reports its APKWS laser-guided rocket, mounted on a U.S. Navy helicopter, has been used for the first time against maritime targets.

In testing, the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System rocket was fired 10 times and scored 10 direct hits on single and multiple maritime targets -- stationary and moving small boats -- using inert warheads from a distance of 1.2 miles to 2.5 miles.

"This demonstration proves the APKWS rocket's ability to engage maritime targets including fast-inshore attack craft," said David Harrold, director of precision guidance solutions at BAE Systems. "The APKWS product gives the U.S. Navy a powerful, mission-ready capability in a very mature and cost-effective weapon that will enable them to defend against today's non-traditional threats."

The APKWS is a guided 2.75-inch rocket system that uses semi-active laser guidance technology.

It has been used successfully more than 100 times during U.S. military operations in Afghanistan and the Navy intends to integrate the system onto its Sikorsky MH-60R/S naval helicopters and other Navy and Marine Corps aircraft.
