GE Marine engines for Japanese destroyer

EVENDALE, Ohio, April 8 (UPI) -- GE Marine of Ohio reports that it has been contracted for gas turbines for use on a new destroyer for the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force.

The contract for two engine modules was issued by Japanese ship-builder IHI Corp. The value of the contract, however, was not disclosed.

"GE gas turbines already are part of the JMSDF's 22DDH (destroyer) program," said Brien Bolsinger, GE Marine's vice president of marine operations. "We are delighted to continue our longstanding partnership with IHI and the JMSDF for the 24DDH follow-on program.

"In fact, as with the 22DDH program, IHI will design and package the LM2500 propulsion modules and LM500 electrical generator sets."

The LM2500 gas turbine is used by 33 navies. Japan's Maritime Self Defense Force already has 66 of the engines for its its Kongou, Murasame, Atago and Hyuga class destroyers.

GE Marine said its LM500 is derived from the TF34 turbofan aircraft engine and Japan uses it to power its Hayabusa and Ichi-gou class boats.

IHI Corp. will manufacture the LM2500 -- with integrated electronic controls – and the LM500 for the destroyer program under license.

The units will be delivered to the JMSDF next year and in 2015.
