Qatar seeks Javelin missiles

WASHINGTON, April 2 (UPI) -- Qatar is seeking a U.S. Foreign Military Sales deal for 500 Javelin missiles and associated items worth $122 million.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency said associated items in the request include 50 command launch units, battery coolant units, missile simulation rounds, Javelin weapon effects simulators, spare and repair parts.

Support equipment, publications and technical data, personnel training and training equipment and logistics support would also be part of the package.

"The proposed sale will improve Qatar's capability to meet current and future threats and provide greater security for its critical oil and natural gas infrastructure," the agency said in its notification to Congress. "Qatar will use the enhanced capability to strengthen its homeland defense."

The principal contractors for the deal would be the Raytheon/Lockheed Martin Javelin Joint Venture in Orlando, Fla. and Tucson.

Assignment of additional U.S. government or contractor representatives to Qatar wouldn't be required.
