ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., March 26 (UPI) -- Northrop Grumman announced its latest upgrade to its range of high-resolution electro-optical/infrared sensors for the Hawk air defense system.
The Fourth Generation Tracking Adjunct Sensor detects and tracks low-flying fast targets and transfers the data to the Hawk's fire control radar.
"With the launch of 4G TAS, Northrop Grumman brings powerful and sustainable new capabilities to operators of the Hawk system," said Jim Mocarski, vice president of airborne tactical sensors at Northrop Grumman.
"We continue to invest in sensors for the Hawk and will support our customers worldwide with these upgrades to help them maintain their national security."
Upgrades to the baseline TAS include a new 640x480 pixel infrared sensor, a new charged-coupled device camera that increases resolution in low light operation and more reliable and sustainable electronics.
Northrop said its earlier TAS systems -- Improved TAS and Advanced Infrared TAS systems -- can be configured to the 4G TAS.
