MASSY, France, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A third new generation radar system is being supplied to a French air force base for integration into an air defense network by ThalesRaytheonSystems.

The tower-mounted radar -- the Ground Master 406 -- will be installed at the Lyon Mont-Verdun airbase. An identical radar system was ordered in September for the Nice Mont-Agel base.

The value of the transaction from the French military procurement agency DGA wasn't disclosed but ThalesRaytheonSystems said the award included a three-year life-support component.

"This new-generation radar, like the system ordered for Nice Mont-Agel, will be integrated with the air defense network of the SCCOA air command and control system to provide airspace monitoring, which is a high-priority mission under the country's Permanent Security Posture ((program)." the company said.

"The new radars will provide the armed forces with a guaranteed threat detection capability at low and high altitudes, high operational availability and simplified maintenance."

The GM 406 radars will also be coupled with NATO systems and French army and navy installations.
