Army getting new comunications facility

HERNDON, Va., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army's main communications facility in Southwest Asia, the central information systems hub in the region, is being modernized by LGS Innovations.

The contract to LGS, an independent U.S. subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent of France, is worth more than $49 million.

"LGS deploys the most advanced, state-of-the-art communications technologies available to both defense and civilian organizations," said LGS Innovations Chief Executive Officer Kevin Kelly.

"This opportunity to upgrade and modernize such a mission-critical piece of infrastructure for the U.S. Army will not only support our military and warfighters abroad but will also help the federal government to continue to provide for homeland security and overcome future overseas communications challenges."

The upgraded MCF will have 9,000 square feet of equipment room space. It will also have multiplexing and de-multiplexing capability for communications circuits transported over copper, fiber, satellite or terrestrial radios.

As part of the contract, the company will engineer, furnish, install, test and secure the Army's extensive network, transmission, and voice infrastructure in the region and develop and install a virtualized infrastructure for moving existing servers from their present locations to the MCF.
