MADRID, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Airbus Military of Spain reports it has delivered the first of three new generation A330 MRTT aircraft ordered by the United Arab Emirates.
The A330 multi-role tanker transport is a converted commercial aircraft. Configuration of the tanker/transport for the Emirates includes two under-wing refueling pods, Airbus' fly-by-wire refueling boom system and a universal aerial refueling receptacle slipway installation for the aircraft's own refueling from another tanker.
The aircraft's basic fuel capacity is 245,000 pounds. As a transport, it can carry 300 troops, or a payload of up to 99,000 pounds. It can also be converted to accommodate up to 130 stretchers for use in medical evacuations.
"It is a great pleasure to see the A330 MRTT now flying in the UAE air force and air defense colors," said Antonio Caramazana, Airbus Military vice president of Derivatives. "We are confident that it will greatly enhance the capability of the UAE air force and contribute to the stability of the (Persian) Gulf region."
Australia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Britain have all ordered the A330 MRTT.
