CANBERRA, Australia, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Australia's Department of Defense reports that its primary data center has been transferred to a new facility in Sydney.

The data migration was accomplished by Accenture, a management consulting and technology service company, which has headquarters in Ireland.

The Data Center Migration project is part of the Department of Defense's Strategic Reform Program to consolidate data centers and IT environments to cut operational costs.

"The successful completion of this significant and complex data migration project will assist the department in realizing its cost-savings goals under the Strategic Reform Program," said Matthew Gollings, head of Accenture's defense business in Australia.

"Importantly, the project will deliver Data Center agility and IT operational effectiveness for the department's business-critical applications including HR, finance and logistics.

"The seamless data migration of the primary data center will lead to savings on support and equipment costs, enhanced delivery of information and communication services and reduced energy consumption by the department."

Matt Yannopoulos, chief technology officer, Australian Department of Defense, added: "The success of what has been a significant and complex journey is a result of Accenture's extensive engagement with many parts of the Chief Information Officer Group and the wider defense organization and their global experience in data centers."
