DARTMOUTH, Nova Scotia, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems Inc. of Canada is to upgrade South Korea's underwater surveillance and anti-submarine detection system.

The contract issued is from South Korea's Agency for Defense Development and covers the first phase of a multi-phase project to modernize the country's Low Frequency High-Power Underwater Sound Source system.

"We have been very pleased with the performance and reliability of UEMS's low frequency system," said Yonggon Lee, ADD's senior researcher.

"The system was designed for technology insertion. The upgrades to be implemented by UEMS will deliver the state-of-the-art performance essential to ADD's advanced research in underwater surveillance and anti-submarine warfare."

UEMS provides sonar systems to navies around the world, including those of the Netherlands, Australia and Britain.

The value of the contract for the initial phase of modernization and the contract length were not disclosed.

"We value our relationships with defence laboratories around the world and are privileged to have the ADD as a strategic customer," said Dan Simard, UEMS's director of business development. "The agency's thought leadership in underwater technology contributes to our capability to deliver the most advanced sonars in the world."
