HAIFA, Israel, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Lockheed C-130H Hercules aircraft operated by the Israeli air force are to be modernized by Elbit Systems Ltd.

Elbit is an international defense electronics company, said the project would extend the operational life of the transports and improve operational capabilities in areas such as precision flying, low-level flying in darkness and operations in adverse weather.

"The modernization will contribute to improved flight safety and reduce operating costs by introducing cutting-edge digital systems to replace obsolete analog systems that have become unreliable and costly to maintain after four decades of intensive service with the IAF," the company said.

The length of the project wasn't disclosed. Elbit also didn't provide details on the monetary value of the Ministry of Defense contract, saying the contract's value "is in an amount that is not material to Elbit Systems."

"We are very pleased to perform this project," said Yoram Shmuely, Elbit's Aerospace Division's co-general manager. "The proposed upgrade utilizes systems, subsystems and applications being deployed on the most advanced platforms and military and civil upgrade programs in order to meet current operational needs and enable integration of future operational and technology capabilities."
