EDGEWOOD, N.Y., Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Sikorsky Aerospace Services has tapped New York's CPI Aerostructures to overhaul and repair stabilator assemblies for H-60 Seahawk helicopters.

The stabilator facilitates easier operation of the maritime aircraft in the confined space of ships.

The contract, worth $5.3 million, takes effect in January but its performance period wasn't disclosed.

"We are very proud that Sikorsky, one of the world's leading helicopter manufacturers, has once again selected us to provide important assemblies for its support of H-60 Seahawk helicopters," said Edward J. Fred, CPI Aero's chief executive officer and president.

"This $5.3 million contract is significant as it represents a first for CPI Aero in the field of Overhaul and Repair, which is a logical development from our core manufacturing skills.

"It is also notable as it comes just after CPI Aero has successfully retained UTC/Sikorsky Supplier Gold status for the second year running."

UTC refers to Sikorsky Aircraft's parent company, United Technologies.

The U.S. Navy has 395 H-60 variants in service. The aircraft is used for a variety of tasks, including search-and-rescue, anti-submarine warfare and medical evacuation.
