ANNAPOLIS, Md., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A $2.8 million order from the U.S. Army for X- and Ku-Band MICRO VSAT satellite communications equipment has been given to TeleCommunication Systems Inc.

"In order to conduct modern operations, our military needs secure and reliable satellite communications," said Michael Bristol, senior vice president and general manager of government solutions at TCS. "MICRO VSAT and baseband equipment meets this need while providing warfighters with the flexibility built into the smallest, lightest man-portable SATCOM terminal available today."

TeleCommunications Systems didn't disclose the number of units it will provide the Army. Neither did it indicate a delivery schedule or other details of the contract.

The contract was given by the U.S. Army Project Manager for the Warfighter Information Network - Tactical Commercial Satellite Terminal Program. Funding for the buy comes from the service's $5 billion World-Wide Satellite Systems contract vehicle.

TeleCommunications Systems has headquarters in Maryland and supplies secure mobile communication technology.
