PARIS, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- AW-101 medium-lift helicopters flown by the Danish air force are to receive upgrades to electronic warfare suites.

Terma, the Danish defense company, said the work will involve two of its business units: Aerostructures and Defense and Security.

The EW equipment to be upgraded and reintegrated includes Terma's ALQ-213 electronic warfare management system, tactical threat displays, tactical data unit and pods integrated with advanced countermeasure dispensers and missile-warning sensors.

The upgrades will be completed by the end of 2013, Terma said.

The Danish air force flies 14 AW-101 helicopters for search-and-rescue operations and troop transport. The aircraft has a cruise speed of 167 miles per hour, a range of 863 miles and a mission endurance of 5 hours.

The aircraft was developed as a joint venture between Agusta helicopters and Westland helicopters, which merged after the helicopter became operational.

Terma announced the contract at the Euronaval exhibition in Paris.
