Mauritania receives Super Tucano

SAO PAULO, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- The Mauritanian air force has received its first A-29 Super Tucano light attack and training aircraft from Brazil's Embraer Defense and Security.

The aircraft, which will be used for border surveillance, was delivered to representatives of Mauritania at Embraer's manufacturing facility in Sao Paulo.

"The Super Tucano has combat proven experience, is versatile and extremely efficient, and offers low operation costs," said Luiz Carlos Aguiar, president of Embraer Defense and Security. "With this delivery, we are broadening our ties with the African continent, where this aircraft has generated great interest."

The Super Tucano is a single-engine turboprop with a maximum speed of 367 miles per hour, a combat radius of more than 340 miles (depending on load) and a service ceiling of 35,000 feet.

The aircraft is equipped with advanced electronic, electro-optic, infrared and laser system technologies and can handle 130 different weapon configurations.

Information on how many A-29s Mauritania may have on order with Embraer wasn't disclosed.
