ITT Exelis officially opens new plant

Oct. 22, 2012 at 7:40 AM   |   Comments

PANAMA CITY, Fla., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- A facility for production of naval anti-mine systems has been officially opened in Florida by ITT Exelis.

The full-service facility is 105,000 square feet and is the result of the growing demand for Exelis' multiple-influence sweep systems, which are towed at high speeds by helicopters and minesweeping ships or used in remotely operated mine-clearance operations.

"To meet customer needs more efficiently, we required a more flexible, consolidated space," said Rich Sorelle, acting president of the Exelis Electronic Systems division. "With this new building, we will be better positioned to provide mine defense capabilities to the U.S. Navy and a growing number of allies."

ITT Exelis relocated its mine defense business from New York to Florida in 2005. Just a few employees worked at the plant then but now more than 100 are involved in the design and integration of minesweeping systems for the U.S. Navy, Britain, South Korea, Japan and others.
