Navy modifies submarine support contract

Oct. 17, 2012 at 10:28 AM

GROTON, Conn., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A $459 million contract modification has been given to General Dynamics Electric Boat by the U.S. Navy for support services for submarines and submersibles.

The modification covers areas such as design, engineering and logistics support and research and development activities. It also provides for information services and support, submarine maintenance, modernization activities, training and affordability/cost-reduction efforts for active submarines and submersibles.

"This work will engage Electric Boat's engineering and design organization, which comprises more than 4,000 employees," the company said. "Possessing proven technical capabilities, these employees work on all facets of the submarine life cycle -- from concept formulation and design through construction, maintenance and modernization and eventually to inactivation and disposal.

The contract for submarines and submersibles modified was originally given to General Dynamics Electric Boat two years ago. It's term is three years and if all options were exercised, would be worth a total of about $1.2 billion.
