Japan police order more AW139s

TOKYO, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- AgustaWestland and its Japanese distributor, Mitsui Bussan Aerospace, have been contracted by the Japan National Police Agency for AW139 helicopters.

The new order for two aircraft will bring the number of AW139s in operation in Japan to 40.

"The company is delighted that JNPA has again selected the AW139 medium twin helicopter for its demanding law enforcement requirement," AgustaWestland's head of region, NE Asia, Andrew Symonds, said "The AW139, as the market leader, is now considered the medium twin engine helicopter of choice for law enforcement requirements both in Japan and around the world."

The AW139 is a twin-engine aircraft with a maximum speed of 193 miles per hour, a range of 573 miles and a service ceiling of 20,000 feet. It has a passenger capacity of 15 people.

The two-helicopters order will be operational with the JNPA in 2014. Police in the country's Toyama Prefecture and Osaka Prefecture will each receive one.

AgustaWestland opened a regional business headquarters in Tokyo in 2008 and has four official service centers for maintenance and repair in the country.
