Elbit, Northrop develop new TF/TA system

HAIFA, Israel, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Israel's Elbit Systems is developing a terrain-following and terrain-avoidance system for C-130 aircraft in cooperation with Northrop Grumman.

The TF/TA system will give the aircraft's pilot ability to fly at low levels under limited-visibility conditions "terrain following and avoidance" profiles.

Elbit said the system uses head-up display application and Northrop Grumman's AN/APN-241 Terrain Following Radar for an avionic upgrade for existing or new C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. It uses a digital terrain elevation database and terrain-following radar as an active sensor that is driven and controlled by Elbit's smart displays.

The TF/TA system has been selected for integration into an ongoing C-130 upgrade program, the company said.

An Elbit-Northrop TF/TA HUD system demonstrator, developed at Elbit Systems' Futures Lab, will be flown aboard an international customer's C-130 next year.

Northrop Grumman's AN/APN-241 radar has been selected as the standard radar for the Lockheed Martin's C-130J Super Hercules and Alenia's C-27J military transport.
