ST. LOUIS, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Boeing will continue to provide C-17 Globemaster III sustainment services through a $2 billion follow-on contract from the U.S. Department of Defense.
The Globemaster III Integrated Sustainment Program contract is a performance-based logistics award and will run from next year through the year 2017.
"This contract award and the recognition from the secretary of defense are testaments to the long-standing partnership between the U.S. Air Force and Boeing," said Gus Urzua, Boeing vice president and GISP program manager.
The Department of Defense recently recognized the U.S. Air Force-Boeing GISP team with the 2012 Secretary of Defense "system-level" PBL Award.
Boeing said services it will continue to provide include forecasting, purchasing and material management for the C-17 and all C-17-unique support.
The Performance-Based Logistics program for the aircraft started in 1998. It results in lower sustainment costs through economies of scale. A total of 42 aircraft were originally covered. Today 246 C-17s are involved worldwide.
