Hybrid GPS for Embraer's KC-390

BERLIN, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A German subsidiary of Northrop Grumman is supplying a hybrid global positioning system and inertial reference system to Embraer Defense and Security of Brazil.

The fiber-optic, gyro-compass LCR-100 Attitude and Heading Reference System from Northrop Grumman LITEF will be used on Embraer's KC-390 airlifter, which is being developed for the Brazilian air force and which is expected to take to the air in 2014.

The LCR-100 gyro-compass brings efficiencies, savings and safety to Embraer's KC-390 military transport aircraft," said Northrop Grumman LITEF Managing Director Eckehardt Keip. "This system will meet the exacting standards Embraer sets for its new aircraft."

The system to be supplied provides navigation information regarding the aircraft's position, heading and attitude. The gyro-compass eliminates the need for a magnetic sensing unit and also provides navigational information in the event of GPS signal loss.
